Hiking trails

There are many scenic walks in Hemsedal and the surrounding area.

You can hike in the high mountains, through snowdrifts and rocks, at the timberline along rivers and creeks, or along paths and old cultural landscape in the valley. From old times there are paths and old packhorse trails leading to the mountain pastures.

When you are out and about in the forests and fields, please show respect for plants and animal life and other's private property.


- Follow the countryside code with free access to outlying fields, not in home fields (pastures, courtyards and planted forestland)
- Open fires in, or close to, woodlands are forbidden 15.04- 14.09.
- Dogs must be kept on a leash 01.04- 30.09.
- Do not break branches of trees or pick/disturb rare plants - leave them for future generations to enjoy.
- Show respect for animals, birds and heritage sites.
- Leave picnic sites clean and tidy, do not litter!
- Fences break easily, please do not climb over them.
- Leave gates as you found them- if they are open, please do not close them.

The Old Royal Route (Kongevegen)

This road is recommended for hicking and cycling. The road is from Venåsen at Tuv and all the way to Bjøberg Fjellstue, with a few short sections along Road 52. Along the road there are four information boards with history of nature and culture in the area.

The Valley Route

Route between Hemsedal village, Hemsedal skisenter and Tuv, also marked from Kyrkjebøvegen/ Seljevegen (in the town centre behind Skogstad Hotell) and to Tuv.

Synarsvaet Nature and Culture trail, 750- 1000m

Synarsvaet, Nature and Culture trail, 750- 1000 meters historic trails and a panoramic view from the rocks at Synarsvaet. Start from Hulbak or Rusto, upward along ancient trade routes to mountain pastures and remote hay fields. Separate map and marked route.
 

Finnstigen

Finnstigen - scenic forest trail starting from Hemsedal Bygdatun at Ulsåk. Continue along the trail to "Gravsetåsen", or take a detour via "Geiteberget" wich is incl. in the "Topp 20".

Footpath

Flood-lit footpath along the river from Hemsedal village to Hemsedal Skisenter and from the Hemsedal village to Ulsåk.

Høgeloft, 1920 m.o.h

This is a day trip to the highest mountain in Hemsedal (not marked).
You get an impressive view of Hurrungane, Jotunheimen and Jostedalsbreen Glacier.

Start from Eldrevatn on the Hemsedal Mountains, or from Kljåen (more demanding).

Ranastongji 1900 m.o.h

A wonderful trail from Vabuleino (Vavatn), upward to a plateau with a fantastic view of Valdres and Jotunheimen (not marked).

At the summit you are standing on the edge of a gorge with sheer cliffs dropping 700 meters straight down to Hestebøttn and Gjeitebøttn.

DNT hiking tours

DNT- Norwegian trekking association has a large route network in the mountains with trademark red T's. We can recommand scenic day trips from Hemsedal to the DNT- cabins, Kljåen, Bjordalsbu, Sulebu, Bjøberg, Breistølen and Iungsdalshytta. "Top 20" Hemsedal

  • Twenty marked hikes to 20 of the mountain peaks in Hemsedal.
  • The hikes vary in difficulty and length, from the easiest where baby carriages can be pushed, to steeper and more demanding hikes. T
  • The easiest hikes are well marked, while directions to the more demanding hikes are kept to a minimum.
  • We recommend buying a Hemsedal hiking map for these hikes.

    At each peak there is a puncher for the "Top 20"-brochure available at the Tourist Office.

    A punched card entitles you to buy the "Hemsedal Top 20" label pin, with additional pin for each mountain you hike.

Hemsedal has many beautiful bike paths, these can also be used for hiking. They are marked on the map, Hemsedal Turkart 1:30 000 with a purple color.

Hemsedal is an excellent starting point for many good cycle trips. The routes are varied and run through beautiful nature with wild, majestic mountains and vigorous valley parts.

There are 13 biking trails, in total 200 km, graded and marked by their level of difficulty. These are as follows:

- 4 green trails, easy and flat terrain.
- 2 blue trails, easy and with a few challenges.
- 7 red trails, physically demanding.
