Christmas in Hemsedal’s restaurants


Christmas is upon us with its tempting sugar-glazed cookies, roasted turkeys and other tasty holiday dishes that are sure to expand our waistband by more than a few inches by the New Year. But what better way to enjoy the Holidays than by taking a well-deserved break from all the cooking and enjoy a sit-down meal with family and friends?

Lucky for you Hemsedal's many restaurants are open all Christmas with many tempting dishes on the menu. Here is an overview of what the restaurants in Hemsedal have to offer this December. 

Skarsnuten Restaurant
Skarsnuten Hotel and Restaurant is idyllically located at 1001 meters with splendid views over Hemsedal and the surrounding mountains. The restaurant is open to everyone, and their lunch service offers both oven-baked pizza for hungry skiers that want to make their way back to the slopes as quickly as possible, as well as an à la carte menu for those who wish to enjoy the food a little longer. The restaurant offer a 3-course à la carte menu for their dinner guests, which is perfect for those who desire a culinary experience with a slightly more sophisticated aftertaste. Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve the chefs at Skarsnuten have created a special menu to capture the Holiday spirit, which includes Norwegian Christmas specials such as the lamb dish Pinnekjøtt, pork ribs, sausages and cloudberries with cream. The starter is a selection of local cured meats and cheeses delicately presented with Christmas herring, marmalade, soured cream from Røros, cranberries and traditional Norwegian flatbread. Their New Year’s Eve dinner and party is especially popular, and includes a 3-course à la carte menu for dinner followed by dancing into the early hours of the morning. It is recommended to book their New Year’s Eve event early, as this is their most popular event of the year.

Pizza: Mon-Sun: 12.00-18.00
À la carte: Mon-Sun: 18.00-22.00

Hemsedal Café
Hemsedal Café is an institution in Hemsedal, having been in the valley since 1989. They are well-known in town for their focus on local produce, and here you can devour everything from juicy burgers and homemade pizza to the House Special, Soapstone. The kitchen uses local produce from Tamt & Vilt, Brandvoll Fjellgard and the cheese factory Himmelspannet, so there are plenty of tempting choices on the menu. Remember that the House Special has to be booked a day in advance.

Fri-Sun: 11.00-22.00

Liv Bistro
Hemsedal’s latest restaurant addition Liv Bistro opens in Fyri Resort this Christmas. They offer an international menu with dishes such as halibut with artichoke, salty lemon and rosemary, rack of lamb with mint, feta cheese and zucchini, green asparagus with smoked ricotta, jalapeno and almond and tarte Flambé with Tuscan cabbage, brown butter and parmesan, to mention some.  If you have already been to most of the restaurants in Hemsedal and want to try something new, this is a great choice.

Lunch: Mon-Sun: 12.00-16.00
Dinner: Mon-Sun: 17.30-22.00

Lodgen Spiseri
Located by the children’s area in Hemsedal Ski Centre Lodgen Spiseri has established itself as a cosy family restaurant offering tasty lunch and dinner. There is a playroom for the children for when they get tired of sitting by the table, and Lodgen also have the largest hot chocolate menu in town, the perfect distraction for the youngest in the family. Lodgen Spiseri also offers catering if you prefer to enjoy your dinner in your cabin with a glass of wine. Christmas Eve they host a Christmas dinner, and it is rumoured that Santa Clause is on the guest list, and New Years Eve they offer a 3-course meal prepared by their experienced chefs, the perfect way to welcome 2020.

Café: Mon-Sun: 09.00-17.00
Lunch: Sun-Thurs: 11.30-15.30 and Fri-Sat 11.00-16.00
Dinner: Sun-Thurs: 16.30-21.00 and Fri-Sat 16.00-22.00

Skigaarden’s three restaurants
In the middle of the slopes in Hemsedal Ski Centre with ski-in/ski-out access lays Skigaarden with its three restaurants offering homemade dishes with a local touch. In Dagligstugu you can enjoy an Italian-style pizza with local toppings prepared by chefs who have studied the art of Italian cooking. In addition to pizza they also offer other lunch dishes suitable for the big- and small eater. Skigaarden also brew their own beer, Skigaardens Pale Ale, which is wonderful paired with one of their pizzas. Dagligstugu is located on the 3rd floor and runs on a drop-in basis. Two floors down is their second restaurant Eldstugu, specialising in hamburgers. The burger are made from scratch with a homemade burger bun, sauce and meat of 100% Norwegian cattle. You make your order and pick it up yourself in the bar.  Skigaarden’s main restaurant Storstugu is their pride and honour, and offers an à la carte menu based on local produce with an Italian twist. The roof is almost as tall as a barn, and the massive panoramic windows offer some of the best views of the Hemsedal Mountains. As Skigaarden is located slightly off the beaten track they offer a taxi-service. Just remember to book it in advance.

Eldstugu (from the 27.12-01.01): Mon- Sun: 11.00-15.00

Kjøkkenkroken in Hemsedal town centre has remained a favourite among locals for years. They offer everything from fallow deer, traditional rakfisk and beef tenderloin to Christmas platters, chocolate fondant and liquorice ice cream, so there is something for everyone’s taste buds. Kjøkkenkroken’s slogan is good food belongs in the mountains after all. Catering is also offered at request. The restaurant is closed until Boxing Day, but after that they are open over New Years.

Harahorn Restaurant
Few can compete with master chef Jørgen Kolderup at Harahorn when it comes to local cuisine. His culinary dishes are inspired by the seasons, the local produce, the nature and mountains of Hemsedal. You can try reindeer, mountain trout, hand-picked cloudberries, crowberries, cranberries, juniper and moss to mention some of the flavours he acquires in his cooking. Harahorn is only open from the 27th of December until New Year’s Eve, so it is recommended to book a table soon as they are expected to be fully booked in the coming days. Arti Kafé
If you love coffee and homemade cookies then Arti Kafé is the place for you. The café is located opposite the grocery shop Spar in Rampa shopping centre in Hemsedal town centre and offers a variety of hot drinks, cinnamon rolls and other freshly baked goods. Arti is a nice place to meet to catch up with an old friend or to please your sweet tooth, perhaps both at the same time. They also serve hot lunch if you need something to warm you up in the winter weather.

Elmas Handel
Elmas Handel is a local coffee shop and Fairtrade seller located opposite the petrol station in Hemsedal town centre. Elmas is especially known for their coffee and homemade cinnamon rolls, and they also sell various eco and Fairtrade products (great if you still have some Christmas shopping left to do). Their ecological coffee is provided fresh and roasted by Den Gylne Bønne, and to go with your cup of coffee the café can tempt you with their oat waffles, vegan soups, smoothies, cakes, toast and sandwiches. During Christmas they also sell the traditional Christmas drink gløgg and various Scandinavian Christmas cookies. The coffee shop is decorated in typical Scandinavian charm with skin of reindeer and Christmas stars in the window. The café also has a selection of board games that you can borrow and play during your visit.

At the top of the Hollvin chairlift is Fjellkaffen, the perfect lunch stop for hungry skiers. Here you can eat Pasta Bolognese, moose burgers and their classic favourite Goulash soup, as well as homemade cakes, chocolate and waffles, to mention a few. Fjellkaffen is also the highest located bar in town situated at 1100 meters above sea level. The café is also rumoured to sell the best mulled wine in town.

Kroken Bar & Bistro
Kroken is the sister-restaurant of Kjøkkenkroken and is usually a lively place to be. Their menu is less formal than the latter, and offers some of the best burgers in town in addition to a selection of various street food. A good choice if you feel that another serving of Turkey, Christmas pudding or eggnog will send you over the edge. Kroken is closed until Christmas Day, but are open from then on until New Year’s Eve.

O’Learys is a sports bar located in Hemsedal Ski Lodge at the bottom of the ski slopes. Created in a traditional Bostonian style the bar gives the impression of a proper American sports bar. People gather here to enjoy beer and watch the football or other sporting events after a long day of skiing. Be aware that the kitchen closes at 22.00.

Hollvin Restaurant & Bar
To reach Hollvin you barely have to take off your skis as the café is located right next to the Hollvin chairlift in Hemsedal Ski Centre. Here they offer comfort food from the morning and until the late afternoon, when their après ski reaches full volume. Food choices include burgers, grilled Paninis, pasta and real Italian pizza, as well as smaller dishes such as salad and soup. The bar serves barista coffee, hot chocolate with cream and cold drinks to silence the thirst after your last run down Hemsedalsløypa. There are seatings both inside and outdoors, so if the sun appears it is nice to enjoy lunch on their terrace.

Ulsåkstølen Kafe
In the middle of the wild nature and beautiful views, by the foot of the majestic Skogshorn mountain, you will find the old farm of Ulsåkstølen. Here they serve traditional Norwegian baked goods like lefse, kvikaku, waffels and more. And of course fresh coffee thoughout the day. So if you need a break on your cross country skiing trip or maybe your ski touring trip, swing by the lovely hosting couple and enjoy a well deserved break. Pssst! They also serve dinner!
